Is There A Right Biological Age For Women To Get Pregnant?

Thanks to improving education and awareness about reproductive technologies and contraception, today couples are much more aware of their priorities, and hence having better control on their fertility. But, this advantage of contraception comes with its own negativities as well….         A girls fertility declines naturally with age, and also pregnancies in the late ages tend to have more complications. A girl is born with fix pool of eggs (oocytes) i.e. around 1 million at the time of birth. This number gradually declines with age which in turn leads to declining fertility.             Fertility gradually begins to decline at around age 32. After age 35, that decline speeds up. At age 37, it’s estimated that you’ll have around 25,000 eggs left.           The risk of miscarriages and genetic complications in the baby also  increases with age, specially after the age 35…. So.. with this background information… my question is ….. IS THERE A RIGHT BIOLOGICAL AGE FOR GIRLS TO GET PREGNANT????? Everyone has a different answer to this question as per there life, career choices, family background, and so on….. Before 20s… Its too tender age to conceive.. ofcourse the chances of conception is good but it has its own complications….. Age of 20s… Early 20s are definitely challenging in many ways for any girl but Late 20s are best time to conceive in terms of health condition, best chances of conception, pregnancy related complications which are least at this age, financial condition, etc. Age of 30s…. Once you hit your 30s, particularly 35 and beyond, we do start seeing a diminution in fertility, but that’s not an absolute—and if you are still quite busy with establishing a career, or haven’t found the perfect partner, you shouldn’t be pushed into getting pregnant just to have a child. Nowadays.. we are so busy making careers we tend to presume that we will take help of IVF and other fertility assisting services to conceive…. but, fertility assistance success, like IVF success rates, also start to decline, adding to the cost of treatment in late 30s….. Having said that, chances of pregnancy complications like Pregnacy induced hypertension, blood pressure, pre mature births, chromosomal problems in babies, etc.. rise significantly with rising age…. After age of 40… By age 40, a healthy woman’s chances of becoming pregnant each month are less than 5 percent. The bigger concern within this age range, however, are the medical risks involved. “Women who are older than 40 have an increase in early pregnancy complications, such as ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages, as well as later pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia, diabetes, placental problems such as placenta previa, low birth weight, and preterm labor, as well as a higher rate of fetal demise. So Again…. question arises… What is the ideal age to conceive??? Ofcourse, its a very personal matter for each couple to decide about their pregnancy. But, as per science, all available literature and researches…. ideal age would  be around the age of 25 years or we can say Mid 20s…. Unfortunately, 25 is the age when motherhood is low on many women’s list of priorities. Age 25 is approximately  the time when today’s young women have finished their formal education, are trying to get off on a good career, trying to find someone they want to spend their life with…. but definitely the practical scenario can be  different and cant be one formula for all… To conclude….I  would say… It’s worth reiterating that there are so many factors that inform the choice to have kids and only you can decide when — and if — you want to become a mother (or father). Whether you choose to have kids at 20, 30, 40, or beyond; biologically, through a surrogate, or via adoption, always listen to your own body and make the decision that makes sense for your own life. You know what’s right for you… Last but not the least, As a Fertility doctor, I can rightfully suggest don’t keep pregnancy as your last priority.. give it a positive thought… its going to be one of most beautiful times of your life… and outcome even more beautiful….

Obesity: Modern man’s fertility enemy

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, and all the evidences suggests that the situation is likely to get worse ahead. In India also, an alarming trend is that overweight/obese women as well as men population has been more than doubled in 2015-16 since last one and a half decade.         We all know that being overweight can negatively affect a person’s overall health. Being overweight or obese as a man can also make it more difficult for a couple to conceive. In fact, men who weigh just 20 pounds (9 kgs) more than their ideal weight are 10% more likely to have maleinfertility. The link between obesity and male infertility is clear, but what is proposed mechanism for the same?? Different researches have given below mentioned factors responsible for affecting chances of fertility – The higher a man’s body mass index (BMI), the more likely he is to have a low sperm count. He is also more likely to have decreased sperm quality and movement. These factors can make it more difficult to conceive, while low sperm quality can also lead to miscarriage. Being overweight or obese can lead to hormonal imbalances. If a man’s body has excess body weight, the male hormone testosterone turns into the female hormone estrogen. When a man has higher than normal estrogen levels, his testicles are less likely to produce sperm. Another problem in obese men is that the scrotum often remains in close contact with the body. Being closer to the surrounding body tissues raises the temperature of the scrotum, which keeps the sperm at a higher temperature. This higher temperature can damage the sperm What is the Solution: Due to the link between obesity and male infertility, it is often recommended, to loose  weight to improve fertility. When patients lose weight by eating a healthy diet and exercising, they improve their odds of conceiving. In fact, many couples can conceive quite quickly after the man lowers his BMI from an unhealthy level. This is also true for the female partner. If a couple is still having trouble conceiving after losing weight, we as, fertility doctors will use diagnostic testing to create an individualized fertility treatment plan. Treatment may include intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), depending on a couple’s situation. What you can do The good news is that by making some changes – eating healthy meals and doing some regular exercise, you can work towards a healthier weight to improve your chance of pregnancy and having a healthy baby. If you or your partner are overweight or obese, losing even a few kilos can improve your chances of getting pregnant. Losing weight is not easy, and it takes commitment and time. But for most people, it is possible. Research shows that if partners get healthier together, there’s a better chance of success. Having support from a partner, family or friend can help you set up healthy lifestyle habits for the future. Men who start healthy eating and exercise more often can increase the quality of their sperm. Ways to Male Healthier Changes Avoid short-term fancy diets or changes that you are unlikely to continue in the future. Set small achievable goals that you can manage (e.g. taking the stairs rather than the lift, using a pedometer to count your steps each day, swapping juice or soft drinks for water). Be realistic and build your goals up slowly over time. Everyone is different. Find a way that works best for you, and fits into your lifestyle.
