What is HPV Vaccination?
HPV vaccination is a preventive vaccine given to protect against human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection that can cause cervical cancer, as well as other cancers such as vaginal, vulvar, anal, penile, and throat cancers, and genital warts.
The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to develop protection against the most dangerous strains of HPV—especially types 16 and 18, which are responsible for around 70% of cervical cancer cases. It is most effective when given before a person becomes sexually active, typically recommended for girls and boys aged 9–14, but it can be given up to age 45.
HPV vaccination is safe, effective, and plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of HPV-related cancers. It is usually administered in two or three doses over several months, depending on the age at which the first dose is given.
Importance of HPV Vaccination
- Prevents Cervical Cancer – Protects against HPV types 16 and 18, which cause approximately 70% of all cervical cancer cases.
- Reduces Risk of Other Cancers – Lowers the chances of developing other HPV-related cancers, including anal, vaginal, vulvar, penile, and throat cancers.
- Prevents Genital Warts – Provides protection against HPV types 6 and 11, which are responsible for about 90% of genital wart cases.
- Most Effective When Given Early – Offers maximum protection when administered before the onset of sexual activity, ideally between ages 9 and 14.
- Contributes to Herd Immunity – Widespread vaccination helps reduce the overall circulation of high-risk HPV strains in the population, benefiting even those who are unvaccinated.
- Safe and Well-Studied – Backed by extensive global research, the vaccine has been proven safe and effective with minimal side effects.
