What is Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH)?

Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH) is an advanced laboratory technique used in in vitro fertilization (IVF) to improve the chances of embryo implantation. It involves using a precise laser to gently thin or create a small opening in the outer shell of the embryo, known as the zona pellucida.

During early development, the embryo must “hatch” from this shell to successfully attach to the uterine lining and begin pregnancy. In some cases—especially in older women, frozen embryos, or embryos with a thicker zona—this hatching process may be more difficult or delayed. LAH assists the embryo in breaking through the shell, making implantation easier and more likely.

This procedure is typically done just before the embryo transfer, using a microscope-guided laser for accuracy and safety. LAH can be especially helpful in patients with repeated IVF failures, poor embryo quality, or advanced maternal age, improving their chances of successful implantation and pregnancy.
