What is Ovulation Induction?
Ovulation induction is a fertility treatment used to stimulate the ovaries to release one or more eggs during a woman’s menstrual cycle. This treatment is particularly helpful for women who do not ovulate regularly or at all, such as those with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or other hormonal imbalances. By using medications that encourage the growth and release of eggs, ovulation induction increases the chances of conception either naturally or through assisted reproductive techniques.
Benefits of Ovulation Induction
- Used to treat anovulation – especially in women with irregular or absent menstrual cycles.
- Involves fertility medications – such as Clomiphene Citrate, Letrozole, or injectable gonadotropins.
- Requires careful monitoring – through ultrasounds and blood tests to track follicle growth and hormone levels.
- Can be combined with IUI or timed intercourse – to improve the chances of pregnancy.
- Carries some risks – including multiple pregnancies and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
- Success varies by individual – and depends on factors like age, diagnosis, and response to medication.
